In 1942 Carole starred in the romantic comedy A Gentleman At Heart. She had the leading role of Helen Mason, a museum owner who falls in love with a bookie. Carole was under contract at 20th Century Fox when she made this film. The cast includes Cesar Romero, Milton Berle, Chick Chandler, Elisha Cook Jr, and Rose Hobart. She and Cesar were close friends and had worked together in Dance HallIrving Wheeler, Carole's first husband, worked on this movie as Chick Chandler's stand-in.

A Gentleman At Heart was directed by Ray McCarey. He had also directed her in Cadet Girl. The costumes were designed by Herschel. It was filmed at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles during October and November of 1941. In early November Carole collapsed on the set and was sent home with the flu. The movie was released on January 16, 1942. Most of the reviews were positive and it was a modest hit. One reviewer said it was a "very amusing, exciting, and unpredictable yarn."
